(title link will take you to each band’s official site)

Marah
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
A rollicking, Springsteen-influenced group who play the most energetic rock and roll in America today, featuring dazzling stream-of-consciousness lyrics and master banjo playing by the Bielanko brothers.
Recommended album: Kids In Philly
(find it at Amazon.com)

Joe Grushecky and the Houserockers
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
An undeservedly obscure blue-collar rock-and-roller who has written some of the most poignant and thought-provoking rock lyrics of the last 20 years.
Recommended albums: Coming Home and Have a Good Time (But Get Out Alive)
(find them at Amazon.com)

Joe Ely
Austin, Texas
A lone star troubador whose folk/rock/country songs perfectly capture the richness and adventure of life in the West Texas desert. Think Cormac McCarthy with a guitar.
Recommended album: Letter to Laredo
(find it at Amazon.com)

Kelly Willis and Bruce Robison
Austin, Texas
A husband-and-wife pair who, working both together and individually, have written some of the most beautiful country/folk songs of the past decade. The ultimate in Austin music.
Recommended albums: Wrapped and What I Deserve
(find them at Amazon.com)

Bill and Bonnie Hearne
Santa Fé, New Mexico
Another husband-and-wife duo, Bill and Bonnie (who are both blind) have spent the last 40 years traveling through the desert and singing about what they’ve experienced. Their self-released tapes, extraordinary word-of-mouth, and Bill’s evocative voice have made them underground legends in Western folk music circles.
Recommended album: The I-10 Chronicles
(find it at Amazon.com)

Alejandro Escovedo
Austin, Texas
Inventor of the Cowpunk genre, an innovative blend of punk and country. Escovedo combines beautifully crafted music with a Raza consciousness, and one writer has called him
perhaps the finest rock and roll songwriter since Bruce Springsteen. High praise indeed.
Recommended album: With These Hands
(find it at Amazon.com)

Bruce Springsteen
Asbury Park, New Jersey
No explanation necessary.
Recommended albums: Nebraska and Darkness on the Edge of Town
(find them at Amazon.com)
