Unlike many personal websites, you won’t find any autobiographies here. That’s because I think you can tell plenty about someone just by knowing what their interests and beliefs are. So instead of telling you all about myself, I’ll introduce you to what I think are some of the most interesting sites on the Web:

Political Causes and Community Organizations

  • AlterNet
If you frequent only one website in your life, make it this one. Intelligent, honest news reporting without all the hypocrisy and falsehoods of the mainstream media.

  • The Sierra Club and The Nature Conservancy
Now that we have an Interior Secretary, Gale Norton, who seems hell-bent on destroying the environment, supporting organizations like these is more important than ever before.

  • Cuba Solidarity
An organization devoted to ending the U.S. blockade that has kept the people of an entire nation in poverty.

  • Hellman-Hammett Grants
Provides financial assistance for writers around the world who have been exiled, imprisoned, tortured, or persecuted because of their writings. The grants are administered by Human Rights Watch and are funded by the estates of playwright Lillian Hellman and crime novelist Dashiell Hammett.

  • Paul Robeson Fund For Independent Media
Because most media outlets are owned by conservative corporations, the only way many filmmakers can find funding for controversial and socially conscious projects is through organizations like this.

  • Ejército Zapatista de Liberación Nacional
Led by Subcomandante Marcos, an army of peasants is still fighting for human rights and land reform in the Southern Mexico state of Chiapas.

  • El Paso Community Foundation
Supports various community causes in West Texas, Southern New Mexico, and Northern Chihuahua. Currently they are trying to raise money for restoration of El Paso’s historic Plaza Theatre.

  • Green Party
Tired of being forced to choose between the lesser of two evils in every election? Give these guys a try.

People I Admire

  • Steve Biko
The Black Consciousness leader who was murdered in South Africa in 1977.

  • César Chávez
The César E. Chávez Institute For Public Policy at San Francisco State has a website about the life of the great labor leader.

  • Frederick Douglass
The Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in Washington, D.C., has all kinds of information about one of the most remarkable Americans of the 19th century.

  • Emma Goldman
The Emma Goldman Papers Project at U.C. Berkeley has a great website about this visionary and early advocate of anarchy, feminism, peace, and free speech.

  • Paul Robeson
Rutgers University has a good website about its most distinguished alumnus, who is my choice as the most interesting and remarkable person in American history.

  • Rubén Salazar
Aztlan.net has an online biography of the journalist and activist for Mexican-American civil rights who was killed by the Los Angeles police during a peace demonstration in 1970.

Baseball Links

  • The Jackie Robinson Society
A now-defunct student organization that I started while attending the University of Texas. The Society is no longer, but its website (designed by yours truly) still survives, and has lots of information on Jackie Robinson.

  • Baseball Primer
I write an occasional column for this intriguing site, which bills itself as "Baseball For the Thinking Fan."

  • Baseball-Reference.com
The best baseball website in existence, hands down. An online baseball encyclopedia with complete career stats for every player in history, plus award winners, postseason results, and much more.

  • Society for American Baseball Research (SABR)
If you’re a student of baseball history, then you should join 7,000 of your closest friends and become a member of this fine organization.

  • Baseball Reliquary
A quirky alternative to the Hall of Fame, its inductees include Bill Veeck, Dock Ellis, and Bill "Spaceman" Lee.

Sites About Movies

Sites About Music

  • Ani DiFranco
If you’ve never heard her music, you’re missing out on some of the most thoughtful and powerful songs in the world.

  • Rage Against the Machine
Even if you don’t dig their music, listen to what they have to saythey’re the most important and influential musical act of our generation.

  • Woody Guthrie Foundation and Archives
    Keeps Woody’s fightin’ spirit alive.

  • Letters at 3 A.M.
A perceptive article about the tragic life of Phil Ochs, by Michael Ventura of the Austin Chronicle.

  • Expecting Rain
There are a lot of Bob Dylan sites out there, but this is the best one.

  • Greasy Lake
There are a lot of Bruce Springsteen sites out there, but this is the best one.

Miscellaneous Links

  • National Writers Union
I’m a member of this AFL-CIO affiliated union, which represents the interests of freelance writers nationwide.

  • Center For Steinbeck Studies
Located at San Jose State University, this is a good place to learn more about the great literary champion of the downtrodden.

  • Tim Hardaway, Uncut
ESPN’s Dan Patrick did a great interview with my favorite basketball player, Miami Heat point guard Tim Hardaway.
